There is no concrete evidence for the exact date of establishment of the Kadamattom church. It ranges from the 4th to the 10th century. (Kadamattathachan: Oru Charithrasparsam, By Utta Bandu)

It is believed that in AD 865 Mar Abo, (also known as Mar Sabour) a Persian prelate established the church with the help and permission of a KARTHA, the then local ruler of Kadamattom. (As per Niranam Grandhavari Mar Abo arrived Kollam in AD 905.)

Mar Abo was not only a theologian but also a conjurer and herbalist. He stayed in a hut along with a poor old widow and her son Paulose and the place now known as ‘Poyedam’.

Paulose assisted Mar Abo for several years. And Mar Abo ordained Poulose as priest and he was later on known as the famous Kadamatttathu Kathanar.

Mar Abo had his eternal rest in Tevalakkara St. Mary's Orthodox Church Kollam Dist.
